The Art of Writing Flash Nonfiction

The Art of Writing Flash Nonfiction

Tuesday, March 28, 2017 6 weeks, (Tuesday) March 28-May 2; 6:30 to 8:45PM Town & Country (address given when registration completed) 190.00

What is it about miniatures that so captures our imagination? The tiny wingtips of a commuter reading a newspaper on a model train, the turning windmill on a charm bracelet, a working chandelier in a dollhouse…small-scale wonders that fit in our hand. Similarly, the compression and attention to detail in flash nonfiction contributes to the form’s capacity to evoke feeling. In this workshop we will read a variety of flash nonfiction pieces and discuss ways to use the factual and the personal to craft brief essays that, although seemingly small, through sharp focus and smart crafting, can become large. Class participants will need to bring nine copies of a 750-word-or-less draft to be distributed for group critique at the first class. Note: Please also bring a copy of the anthology In Short, edited by Judith Kitchen and Mary Paumier Jones. This workshop will be taught by Kim Lozano and is limited to 8 participants.

Note: St. Louis Writers Guild members who wish to receive a 10% discount must contact us prior to registration at; instructions will then be given on how to proceed and receive the reduced fee.
